YCS is the online site for course listings in Yale College, the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, and several professional schools. It shows the courses that are offered each academic term, with the name of the instructor and the course description. It has a robust search engine and the site is updated regularly during the academic year.

Search Features & Tips

  • Use the menu on the left to apply filters to narrow your search.
  • In the ‘Keyword’ box, search by instructor name, subject code, or part of the course title.
  • The system defaults to the current term, however, you can search by past terms. 
  • If enrollment for a course is managed by the department, see the class notes section for details. Not all courses have class notes.
  • Advanced Search” provides more filters such as Instructor or Meeting time.
  • Use “Attributes” to search for courses that fulfill distributional designations and major requirements.  
  • Course Demand Statistics and Discussion/Lab Section Statistics help students understand the enrollment perspectives . 
  • Clicking on a course in the Search Results opens to course details and resources.  
  • Buttons in the course resources area may include Course Evaluations, Syllabus, Buy Books, and Share.
  • There are helpful links to more resources at the bottom of the search menu

The Yale Course Search registration icons legend and the Understanding Registration Error Messages chart address issues related directly to adding courses to the registration worksheet in YCS.  

Yale Course Search performs best using the most current versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. If you are using Internet Explorer, you must deselect the Compatibility View settings.

Syllabi are posted by instructors on Canvas. If a syllabus button is missing from a course, it means the instructor for the course has not posted a syllabus to the course’s Canvas site yet.

Limited course information is available to the general public through Yale Course Search. When logged in, additional information becomes available based on your role and your school.

These links are found on Yale Course Search by scrolling to the bottom of the left-hand search panel.

Yes.  Below the Worksheets section in the search menu, click to expand the “Yale College Attributes” section and select the necessary distributional requirement, then click “Search” at the top of the menu.  A list of all courses eligible to satisfy the distributional requirement will be listed in the Search Results.

Course information attributes help identify courses that can apply to major, program or certificate requirements for any Yale University course listed in YCS while Yale College attributes apply broadly to features of undergraduate courses such as seminars and distributional requirements.  Visit the Attributes page for more information.
