Cross-School Course Registration Processes

Yale College, the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, and the Yale University professional schools offer a vast array of courses. Students often choose to enroll, when possible, in courses outside their home school.

The course registration process varies from school to school, in some cases on a different timeline, or with special forms. See below for school-specific registration information.

Further questions should be directed to the registrar of each school. Find contact information for each professional school in the linked schools at the bottom of this page.

Cross-School Course Registration Process

Yale University is comprised of:

  • Yale College
  • Graduate School of Arts & Sciences
  • Professional schools: Architecture, Art, Divinity, David Geffen/Drama, Environment, Jackson/Global Affairs, Law, Management, Medicine, Music, Nursing and Public Health

Cross-school registration occurs when a student admitted to one of these schools (i.e. their “home school”) would like to register for a course in another school (i.e. “outside the home school”).

For instance, a School of Architecture student registering for a course in the School of Architecture is within their home school, whereas a Yale College student wishing to register for a course in the School of Architecture does so from outside of the school.

Thus, students must follow the correct procedure for “outside” student registration when applicable. The outside students registration process varies from school to school and may depend on the type of student applying (i.e. undergraduate, graduate, professional).

  • Incoming first-term J.D. students are assigned courses and may not elect other classes or change class assignments.
  • All other law students have two opportunities to select courses and finalize schedules each term:
  • During the law school course bidding period prior to each term (generally October for the spring term and June for the fall term), students bid via YLS:Courses for limited enrollment and experiential courses and put in their preferences for open enrollment and permission of instructor courses.
  • During the open add/drop period the first week of the term, students may adjust courses in Yale Hub, and add Supervised Research, reading groups, and non-law courses.
During the open add/drop period, law students may request to take one course outside the Law School by completing a Course Outside the Law School Form, including a copy of the syllabus for the course, the course description, permission from the instructor and approval from a sponsoring Law School professor. Final approval and credits are determined by the Law School registrar.  See the website for additional information

During the open add/drop period, students outside the Law School may register for one law course with the permission of the instructor and the Law School registrar. Students obtain instructor permission by completing the applicable form for Graduate/Professional Students or Yale College Students. Students ask their home school registrar to complete enrollment. First-term courses are not open to non-law students.  See the website for more information.

Grad/Prof students submit the SOM request form and bring proof of approvals to your home school registrar to complete enrollment.

Yale College students wishing to enroll in a School of Management course must first submit the SOM request form.  After receiving SOM’s approval, attach a screenshot of that approval to the Request to Enroll in a Yale Professional School Course form.  Notice that enrollment requires the submission of two forms.

This includes courses in the MD Program, MHS Program, Physician Assistant Online Program, and the Physician Associate program.

Students register directly for outside courses in Yale Hub (if outside school is active in Yale Hub). Otherwise, students complete an internal Outside Course request form, and receive permission of the instructor and/or registrar if required by that unit; the YSM registrar adds the course to the student’s schedule.

For YSM Applied Studies courses (music history, etc), outside students need permission from the YSM faculty and YSM registrar. Enrollment is limited and priority is given to YSM students.

YSM Performance courses are restricted to YSM students, except Secondary Lessons (music.yale.edu/music-lessons-program), and a few other performance courses.

If approved to enroll in a YSM course, register in Yale Hub, or ask home registrar to complete enrollment.

The Nursing Registrar will manually add students to the course if they are not able to register in Yale Hub. Outside students need permission from the instructor and the Nursing Registrar. With permission, the home school registrar will complete enrollment.

Students are permitted to take courses outside of YSPH to fulfill elective requirements as long as they are 300-level or above and they have rationale as to how it fits into their degree goals.

If an outside school doesn’t have a special form or procedure, students should obtain instructor permission and follow any directions in the course description.

For registration purposes, students are asked to follow the policies and procedures of the other school (e.g., SOM’s non-SOM enrollment form; Law School form; Jackson instruction permission; etc.) See website for more information.

For cross-listed courses, students follow the procedures for the primary school, unless the course has a YSPH number, in which case they register under the YSPH number.

No special permission or process is required by the YSPH Registrar; students should finalize enrollment (when possible) in the Hub,  or notify their home school registrar to complete enrollment.

If a course is in high demand, YSPH student enrollment takes priority in YSPH primary courses.

All students, even students not enrolled in Yale College, the Graduate School, or one of the professional schools may apply to enroll in a Summer Session course. Visit the Apply page for more information.

Students must add the professional school course to their registration worksheets before the end of add/drop period.

Students seek permission from the instructor and then ask their home school registrar to complete enrollment.
