About Graduate School Courses
There is no restriction for the number of Graduate School of Arts and Sciences courses a Yale College student may take.
Before attempting to register for either a graduate or professional school course, undergraduate students should read carefully the academic regulations pertaining to Courses in the Yale Graduate and Professional Schools.
Students may wish to consult with their advisers before making plans to enroll in a course in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences or one of the professional schools at Yale University.
Up to four course credits earned in the professional schools of the University may be applied toward the Yale College bachelor’s degree. No such restriction applies to courses taken by undergraduates in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

Yale College students are not permitted to enroll in independent study courses in the GSAS or in any of the professional schools, unless they have been accepted into the program for the simultaneous award of the bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
If a Graduate School course cannot be added to the registration worksheet, then Yale College enrollment in the course is not permitted. Refer to a partial list of historically approved Graduate and Professional School courses for Yale College credit.
Most Graduate School courses award 1 credit, but in some instances 0.5 or 2 credits.
When a course has both a Yale College and a Graduate school course number, Yale College students may register for either number. However, should a student wish to change school levels (Graduate School or Yale College), the deadline to do so is the last day of classes in the corresponding term of enrollment.
A Yale College student may offer as many as four course credits earned in professional schools of the University toward the 36-course-credit requirement for the bachelor’s degree; however, a professional school course is not guaranteed to yield full or even partial Yale College credit.
A professional school course is not guaranteed to yield full or even partial Yale College credit. The grades for these courses may not be converted to Credit/D/Fail mode. Unless a student has already been accepted into the simultaneous degree program, they may not take an independent study course through the professional schools.
Several professional schools register on a different timeline than Yale College. For schools that register later than Yale College, undergraduates will not be able to add their courses to the registration worksheet. In this case, students follow the instructions on the Cross-School Course Registration for the “Outside Students Registration” process for the professional school in which the course resides.
In order to enroll in a professional school course (except for School of Management), Yale College students must add the course to their registration worksheet (for 0 credits) and complete a Request to Enroll in a Professional School Course form to request Yale College credit.
Use Request to Enroll form for professional school courses. Requires instructor & school approval. Registrar awards credit if approved.
Not all professional school courses earn Yale College credit. See list of previously reviewed courses for reference - no enrollment guarantee.
